NGC 1365 is a large barred spiral galaxy in the Fornax Cluster. The distinguishing feature of NGC 1365 is its prominent bar that cuts across the central region of the galaxy. Although highly visible, this bar is only part of a more complex structure. The main bar leads to long spiral arms that extend outward, creating visible spiral patterns around the galaxy's center. NGC 1365 encompasses an impressive expanse, stretching over about 200-300 thousand light-years. NGC 1365 is classified as a Seyfert Type 1 galaxy, indicating intense radiation emissions associated with nucleus activity. The source of the radiation is most likely material falling onto a black hole.

NGC 1365 is also a site of intense star formation. These regions mainly form along the spiral arms of the galaxy, where the density of matter is sufficient to initiate the process of forming new stars. Long-exposure images reveal beautiful reddish-pink hydrogen emissions in these areas, further enriching the appearance of the galaxy.

It was discovered by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop on September 2, 1826. He used a self-built 9-inch reflector in Parramatta, New South Wales. Unfortunately, he made a transcription error and therefore was not recognized as the discoverer in the GC or NGC catalog. John Herschel independently discovered this galaxy on November 28, 1837, during sky surveys in South Africa.
